What hobbies should be encouraged by parents in 2023?

Follow Us:

If you’re one of the 19.3 million families in the UK, chances are you’ve considered the prospect of letting your children take up some hobbies.

Although hobbies might not seem essential, they are exceedingly important for your child’s development. For example, hobbies allow your child the opportunity to actively learn more, broaden their horizons and help their educational development. This is especially important as the number of pupils requiring additional speech and language support has increased by 10% in the last year

If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve broken down all you need to know about hobbies below.

How can hobbies help your children?

As well as being a fun pastime, hobbies can have many benefits, including:

1. Self-discovery

Children’s knowledge of the outside world in their early years is limited to what they see and experience inside their own homes. Hobbies give your children the chance to broaden their horizons and get an insight into the real world.

Exposing your kids to hobbies can help pique their interests and help them to realise what they are – and aren’t – interested in.

If you allow your child to take up hobbies from a young age, you’ll soon let your little one’s undiscovered talents shine through.

2. Confidence

As children engage in hobbies, they’re not just having fun. Kids can work on their motor skills, utilize their creativity, and even dabble in some problem-solving.

By allowing your child to develop in this way, you’ll soon see the benefits as you watch their self-esteem, confidence, and discipline skyrocket.

Fun and practical hobbies to encourage

So, we’ve convinced you that hobbies are important. But what hobbies are to be encouraged in 2023? Here are our top 3.

1. Practical hobbies

Electronics can be hugely beneficial for children to learn. Things like coding have been fed into the school curriculum for years and it’s widely believed that they should now be incorporated at home too. There are so many innovative tech solutions that bring new ways of learning into the classroom – tech certainly doesn’t have to be boring!

2. Musical instruments

Not every child is going to be the next prodigy. But your child might be more musical than you think! Where you can, try to encourage your children to learn an instrument to help stimulate their brain, improve their memory and provide an outlet for their creativity.

3. Let them experiment in the kitchen

Although we’re not suggesting letting your kids near your chef’s knives, taking up activities like cooking and baking can help children develop their motor skills. For example, pouring liquid requires careful hand and eye coordination!

Final thoughts

Being a parent is tough. But where you can, it’s important to help your child embrace their inner creativity. Even if it can be challenging at times to be a pastime supervisor, the benefits of hobbies far outweigh the negatives. After All, you wouldn’t want your child to lose a passion they didn’t even realise they had!

Your child’s future is in your hands.
