DeVonta Smith, Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver, has been awarded the Heisman Trophy for the 2020 college football season.
DeVonta Smith—the 4th person to win this award
Awarding the trophy has created history as this is the first time a wide receiver has won the prestigious award. Since the Heisman’s inception in 1935, Smith becomes just the fourth wide receiver to win the renowned trophy. In the year 1991 Desmond Howard of Michigan won the Heisman Trophy.
Given the current scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic, Smith accepted the Heisman Trophy virtually from the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa. A college football season had an award ceremony unlike any other. The Heisman Trophy is presented in December at a star-studded event in New York.
Smith has had quite a dominant season for the undefeated Tide this year. He caught 105 passes for 1,641 yards and scored 20 touchdowns. Smith won the award with 1,856 points. Trevor Lawrence— Clemson quarterback was second with 1,187 points was supposed to bag the Heisman Trophy. But, he missed the last two games after he constricted the coronavirus.
“I kind of feel relieved just that it’s over with now (and) I can focus on this last game,” Smith said. “It feels great just to hear my name called.” Being one of four wide receivers of the award, Smith said the award “means a lot to me.”
Smith to star in the Ohio State Buckeyes game!
Alabama’s upcoming national title game against the Ohio State Buckeyes expects Smith to star in. The game is set for January 11 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Former Auburn star Bo Jackson, the Heisman winner in 1985, tweeted: “Congrats young man and Roll Tide to @DeVontaSmith_6 on winning the @HeismanTrophy – Welcome to the club!”
