Apple unveils new MacBook
Apple has unveiled its new 16-inch MacBook Pro, which promises an improvement in both appearance and performance. Models will be available in silver and space grey starting at $2,499 next week.
The new Pro may be configured with Apple’s new 10-core processors, the M1 Pro and M1 Max, which have eight “high-performance” cores and two “high-efficiency” cores. The M1 Max features twice as many GPU cores as the Pro (32 vs. 16) and twice the memory bandwidth, as well as 64GB of unified memory (the Pro has 32GB).
New additions to the MacBook
The chassis has also been given a contemporary makeover. The gadget weighs 4.7 pounds and is 16.8mm thick. It has a 16.2-inch display. The Touch Bar has been replaced with physical keys, and there is an HDMI port, as well as a Thunderbolt 4 port and an SDXC slot, on the right side, with a headphone jack and two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the left. According to Apple, it’s the most connectivity we’ve ever seen from a Mac laptop – the M1 Pro model supports up to two Pro Display XDRs, while the M1 Max configuration can handle up to three in addition to a 4K TV.
In November 2019, the first MacBook Pro 16 was released. It had a design that was quite similar to the previous 15-inch MacBook Pros and was powered by Intel’s 9th Generation CPUs (which are now two generations old). Reviewers lauded its excellent keyboard and acoustics, as well as its power, but bemoaned its restricted connection – there were just two Thunderbolt ports on either side.
There’s a new 1080p camera that, according to Apple, performs twice as well in low light than prior MacBook cameras. Spatial Audio is supported by a new six-speaker sound system, and the Liquid Retina XDR display has a reported peak brightness of 1,600 nits. Apple claims that the new cooling system can move “50% more air” than prior MacBooks with lower (and hence quieter) fan speeds.
Longest Battery life
According to Apple, the 16-inch Pro will provide 21 hours of video playing on batteries, which is “the longest battery life ever on a Mac notebook.” As battery performance varies depending on activity, we wouldn’t expect most people to get that result — but anything close would undoubtedly be category-topping. For simple juicing, the MacBook also supports MagSafe 3 and quick charge.
The M1 Pro and M1 Max must step into huge shoes. When it comes to processing power, efficiency, and integrated graphics, Apple’s M1 processor (which currently powers the MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iPad Pro, and the 2021 iMac) has blasted competitors out of the water.
