DVSD has seven schools, each contributing to a dynamic environment focused on developing well-rounded individuals equipped to manage the complexities of life.

With around 4,400 students, the school district has gained recognition at both the state and national levels. This achievement reflects the strength of its community, the vision of its administration, and a firm dedication to student success. At DVSD, education goes beyond test scores and rankings; it adopts a holistic approach to education that emphasizes culture, collaboration, and care. This commitment helps cultivate not only academic achievers but also responsible citizens who are prepared for their future endeavors.

Join us in exploring the inspiring journey of the Delaware Valley School District, which shines brightly as a beacon of educational excellence in the Pocono and Catskill region.

A Legacy of Learning and Growth

The Delaware Valley School District has a rich history of serving the communities along the Delaware River. Established to provide quality education in the region, the district now comprises four elementary schools, two middle schools, and one comprehensive high school. The district’s mission emphasizes its commitment to maximizing student potential, fostering lifelong learning, and promoting responsible citizenship, all in partnership with the community. This vision guides every aspect of the district’s operations.

Over the years, the DVSD has navigated demographic shifts, including a significant enrollment surge following 9/11, which brought the student population to over 5,000. This was followed by a stabilization period after the 2008 housing crisis. These experiences have shaped the district’s understanding of its community and the evolving needs of its students.

The Power of “Great Culture”: Continuous Improvement, Collaboration, and Care

What truly distinguishes Delaware Valley is its deeply ingrained “Great Culture,” which is founded on the principles of continuous improvement, collaboration, and care. The district encourages a mindset focused on constant improvement, motivating both students and staff to work hard, learn from failures, and develop perseverance. Collaboration is essential for growth, with teamwork actively promoted among teachers to enhance both teaching and learning.

Furthermore, the emphasis on care extends beyond academics, nurturing the whole child by ensuring they are safe, healthy, engaged, supported, and challenged. This holistic approach aims to shape not only academically successful students but also well-rounded and responsible individuals. As one community member insightfully stated, “Delaware Valley kids are just built differently,” highlighting the district’s unique cultural identity.

A Rich Tapestry of Educational Programs: Nurturing Diverse Talents

DVSD takes great pride in offering a dynamic and comprehensive range of educational programs designed to inspire and challenge students. The district features 31 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, providing rigorous academic opportunities across various disciplines. Recognizing the importance of STEM education, DVSD implements the Project Lead the Way curriculum from middle school through high school, offering hands-on, experiential learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Moreover, the innovative journalism program empowers students with real-world media skills by enabling them to create a monthly school newspaper, maintain an online platform, produce podcasts, and stream virtual events.

Additionally, six years ago, DVSD introduced the AP Capstone Program, which includes the establishment of the DVSD Institutional Review Board (IRB). This initiative empowers students to conduct high-level research projects, fostering critical thinking and scholarly exploration.

Meeting the Needs of Every Learner: Inclusivity and Support

DVSD recognizes the diversity of its student body as a significant strength. The district is committed to creating programs that support both high-achieving students and those who require more intensive interventions. This inclusive approach ensures that every learner, regardless of their background, learning style, or abilities, has the opportunity to grow and succeed.

The dedication of the district’s exceptional teachers and staff is crucial in helping each student make meaningful progress throughout the school year. This commitment is especially important given the recent increase in economically disadvantaged families, which now make up 45.8% of the student population.

In response, the district continually adapts its support systems to meet the diverse needs of all students. The school district’s academic and cultural mindset of “1DV”, has produced notable improvements in attendance and academic performance across all seven schools in each tested subject.

Leadership That Matters: The Engine Room of DVSD

DVSD understands the pivotal role of leadership in a successful organization. Two years ago, the district reorganized its Central Office Administration to better support students and staff. As part of this plan, they created two new Assistant Superintendent positions: one for Academic Leadership and Culture and another for Federal Programs and Community Engagement.

To support student well-being, they also appointed a Director of Mental Health and Student Support Services. Additionally, they introduced a Supervisor of Academic Services to assist with K-12 academic programs.

The leadership team now includes a Business Manager, a Director of Human Resources, a Director of Support Services, and two Supervisors of Special Education. This restructuring aims to improve efficiency and effectiveness while keeping costs the same, showing a responsible approach to leadership.

Beyond the Classroom: Extracurricular and Enrichment

The Delaware Valley School District is dedicated to nurturing well-rounded individuals, and its wide range of extracurricular activities and sports programs reflects this commitment. Each school in the district offers a variety of clubs, with the high school showcasing an impressive 52 options. To accommodate student interests, the district has a process in place that allows students to propose new clubs and activities.

In terms of athletics, DVSD fields 26 high school sports teams and has recently expanded its offerings to include Unified Bocce and Unified Track and Field. These programs promote inclusivity and teamwork for all students, regardless of their abilities.

The district also takes pride in its outstanding music program, which begins in elementary school and includes band, chorus, and orchestra. This program consistently produces students who earn accolades such as all-region, all-state, and All-East awards. The athletic program is similarly impressive, winning PIAA District II team titles in seven to nine sports each year.

The high school student newspaper, The Del.Aware, is recognized as the best in Pennsylvania. Additionally, students in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America), HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), and Scholastic Quiz Bowl advance to national competitions every year, with FBLA being named the top chapter in Pennsylvania for three consecutive years. Moreover, seven teams have qualified for the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals for two straight years.

The district has also achieved the National “Best Communities for Music Education” designation for nine consecutive years and has also been recognized by Project Lead the Way as a “High School of Distinction” in Engineering and Sciences. We have received multiple National Scholastic Art Awards as well as being named Outstanding Visual Arts Community from PAEA for the last two years.

Currently, DVSD has a Congressional Art Winner displayed in the US Capitol. Their Foreign Language Department has been consistently recognized by the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association as an exemplary language department in the state.

Preparing for Life’s Journey: Career Counseling and Mentorship

DVSD covers 200 square miles and focuses on building strong partnerships with the community. This helps provide students with job opportunities and real-world experiences. The high school has a strong Career and Technical Education (CTE) program that allows students to explore various career paths before they graduate.

At Delaware Valley, the expectation is clear: every student must have a plan for their future, whether it involves pursuing higher education, entering the workforce, or joining the military. This proactive approach ensures that students are not only academically prepared but also have a clear sense of direction for their lives after graduation.

Building Bridges: Community Partnerships for Enhanced Learning

The Delaware Valley Educational Foundation plays a vital role in improving both the school district and the local community. This nonprofit organization partners with local businesses and other nonprofits to support a range of initiatives, including capital projects, student scholarships, and community-driven fundraisers. Through this, they nurture meaningful connections that directly benefit the students and families in the Delaware Valley School District. This also further enhances the relationship between the school and its surrounding community.

A Word from the Helm: Superintendent’s Vision

“Every student in our district has the opportunity to achieve success, supported by an outstanding faculty dedicated to fostering strong, positive relationships with their students,” says Superintendent Dr. Brian Blaum.

His message to students and parents is one of high expectations and dedicated support: “Always aim for excellence and never settle for less than your best. Embrace a growth mindset, and success will follow.”

This sentiment captures the essence of Delaware Valley School District—where every student is encouraged to reach their full potential, guided by a dedicated team and a supportive community.
