People from different visual fields gathered at one place

Montclair State University (MSU) hosting an International Forum on Graphic Recording and Facilitation. The digital news labs and television studios of the School of Communication and Media went back to fundamentals of the communication, when the experts who are working in different visual domains, came out with their pen and paper.

The expert shared their ideas through old school live drawing and note taking in this era of innovation driven by technology. The conference was opened with the lecture of Thomas E. Franklin, an award-winning photographer and Assistant Professor at Montclair State. He covered the topics of merging of art, journalism and visual storytelling. A graphic recorder was translating his words into vivid images and text on the big sheets of paper.

The number of organizations that are using the visual interpretation of their ideas is increasing. The plans and strategies of the professional look good if a difficult vision is creatively and visually presented, the audience will able to grasp the matter lot more easily. Brandy Agerbeck, a Graphic Recorder, and Author from Chicago talked to the students in the seminar and said,” it’s so exciting to see your words up on that piece of paper and to be listened to.”

Great opportunity for the students to learn from the experts

Yi Luo, Associate Professor and Coordinate of the Graduate Program and Organizational Relation said, “As host to the International Forum of Visual Practitioners, Montclair State showcased its multimedia facility and its place at the forefront of the rapidly changing landscape of communication and digital media.”

The visual practice is been part of the graduation program and from weeks prior to the conference, the students from different sections of media worked with Professor Philip Bakelaar and experts from different fields to learn effective thinking and visual communication.

The influence of visual expression on the world touched a chord with the 18-year-old grad student Adrianne Natoli. She said, “I travel 15 minutes to get to Montclair State, yet people traveled from Belgium, England, Canada and countless other countries too numerous to mention to take part in the International Forum of Visual Practitioners.”
