Voting can be hard especially if no one has ever shown you how. There are many reasons why people choose not to vote and how we students can help combat this perception to help create a more engaged form of government.
When students are asked generally they had dozens of reasons why they don’t vote. They were too busy, was school, in a job, in an internship, they don’t really care, they don’t know whom to vote for, are some easy explanations the studies came through.
But the one observation kept coming up in all of the interviews that made sense for students at the colleges/universities in the nation. Many students just aren’t from here and they can’t fly home to cast their vote. Many of them intended to make a trip to the voting booth and that seemed promising but when asked why they are voting for candidate half of the students were failed to provide anything more than a starter. The ambitious they are but lack the initiative to become informed about what is actually happening in the country.
Young people and politics have always been a highly discussed topic mainly because so many believe that they are not educated enough to vote. If you live in a country that is largely populated you will find students fighting for a change. You would think they would be able to change politics and its outcomes.
However, the stigma surrounding students’ voting still remains. What we have seen in the last few years is the level of education among voters has become an important indicator of how people will vote. The researches basically show that people with a higher level of education and a university degree are more likely to be liberal.
We as students must understand there are votes that mean more than ever before. We have been given a voice as well as a platform to stand on for all to hear and see what we are capable of. We have the power to shape the outcome of the election but if we student does not accept the responsibility of knowing who is putting in power and why you are asked to stay at home on election days.
But if you take the initiative to understand what’s happening around you, accept responsibilities as students of becoming informed of the issues we face today and the outcomes of tomorrow. And you understand the power and importance of your vote then use your voice and lead the country to a brighter future.
